Digital Trends for the Next Decade

Looking back at the past 10 years, we must take a deep breath and realize how far we have come with regards to technology. We have been discussing what computers and technology we had just 10 years ago, and how they compare to what we have now.  I don’t want to dwell on the past but I would love to hear your comments about what technology you were using 10 years ago.

Here are a few trends to look for in the coming decade:

  1. I believe we will see a continued move towards distributed computing. Smaller devices will become more capable and integrated into the network. More people will be using smartphones at the end of the next decade. More devices in the household will be able to connect to the Internet and retrieve information.
  2. While at the same time the network backbone will be pushed to its limits. New technology and capacity will be needed to keep pace with demand. We’ll continue to see companies such as AT&T struggle to keep pace with network demand as they try to balance short-term profit versus capital investment.
  3. Healthcare IT will outpace growth in any other segment of the IT industry. Whether or not the Healthcare bill passes, we will see an increase in demand for centralized medical records thanks to the Government’s push for eRecords as well as the insurance industry’s own need to be more efficient.
  4. The Internet will continue to become more diverse, with more foreign countries and languages having a greater amount of websites online than English speaking countries.

What are the technology trends you see in the next decade?
